5 Day Devotional for 7/14/25

5 Day Devotional

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from this weekend. We will explore the complexities of pain and suffering through the lens of Job's story and the words of Jesus, aiming to find hope, purpose, and God's unending love in our own hardships.

Day 1

Job 1:21

In the face of unspeakable loss, Job declares, "Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." This radical faith Job shows reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God, and it's His to give and take away as He sees fit. It points us to the importance of recognizing God’s sovereignty over all things, and how continuing to praise Him amidst suffering demonstrates our trust in His goodness and plan.

Job’s immediate reaction to praise God during his darkest moments also encourages us to fortify our faith. It’s easy to worship when life is good, but our true belief is tested in our trials. By focusing on God’s eternal nature and unwavering love, we can find the strength to endure suffering, knowing that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Even without understanding why we suffer, we can trust that God is with us and worthy of our praise.

  • How do you typically respond when faced with loss or suffering?

  • In what ways can you practice praising God in difficult times?

  • What can you learn from Job's response to his suffering that you can apply to your own life?

  • Ask God for the strength to praise Him amidst your trials.

  • Pray for a deeper understanding of God’s sovereignty in your life.

Day 2

Isaiah 55:8-9

God’s ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts. The prophet Isaiah highlights this profound truth, reminding us that what we see and understand is limited compared to God’s vast and perfect perspective. This is a key concept when wrestling with the problem of pain and suffering. God’s plan often doesn’t align with our desires or understanding, but His purposes are always good and for His glory.

When we face suffering, we may feel confusion or even anger. It's natural to wonder why a loving God allows pain. Yet, Isaiah urges us to trust in God's higher wisdom. Through faith, we can draw closer to God, allowing our doubts and questions to drive us to seek Him more earnestly. Let this truth comfort you: God knows what we do not, and He is both good and trustworthy, even when circumstances seem incomprehensible.

  • In what areas of your life are you struggling to understand God's plans?

  • How can you remind yourself of God's higher ways and thoughts during confusing times?

  • What does it mean to you that God's plans are for His glory and our ultimate good?

  • Pray for peace in accepting God's sovereignty.

  • Ask for clarity and faith to trust in His greater plan.

Day 3

John 9:1-3

Jesus teaches His disciples a vital lesson when they come across a man born blind. They ask, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus responds, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him." This scripture highlights that suffering is not always due to our sin, but it can be an opportunity for God to reveal His glory through our lives.

Understanding that our pain can serve a greater purpose shifts our perspective. Instead of viewing suffering solely as a burden, we can see it as an avenue for God's work to be displayed in us. This doesn't minimize the reality of our pain but offers hope that God is intricately involved in our struggles, using them to show His love, grace, and power. Embrace the idea that in your suffering, God's work might be revealed, bringing you closer to Him and providing a testimony of faith to others.

  • How does knowing pain can reveal God's glory change your view on suffering?

  • Can you identify moments in your life where you’ve seen God work through your hardships?

  • How can you be more open to God using your current struggles to showcase His grace and power?

  • Pray for the ability to see God's hand in your suffering.

  • Ask for the strength to use your hardships as a testimony of His goodness.

Day 4

Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 offers a profound promise: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This assurance comforts us in the midst of suffering, declaring that no matter what we face, God can and will use it for our benefit and His glory. This does not imply that everything will be easy or that suffering isn't tough, but it confidently asserts that our pain is not meaningless.

Holding onto this promise requires faith and trust in God's ultimate plan. Reflecting on how God has used past trials for good can strengthen our belief in His current workings. The challenge is to perceive our hardships through the lens of faith, trusting that God is weaving everything into a beautiful tapestry of purpose. Take heart in the knowledge that God’s involvement in our suffering means it is infused with potential for growth, transformation, and divine purpose.

  • What past suffering has God used for good in your life?

  • How can you remind yourself of God’s promise in Romans 8:28 during current struggles?

  • What steps can you take to trust more deeply in God's purpose for your life?

  • Ask God to help you see the good He is working through your trials.

  • Pray for increased faith to trust in His plans.

Day 5

Revelation 21:4

Revelation 21:4 provides a glimpse of our final hope: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." This powerful vision of our future assures us that suffering and pain are temporary and will be abolished. In the new creation, God will bring complete restoration, doing away with all forms of suffering and ushering in eternal joy and peace.

This promise shapes how we live today. The knowledge that our suffering has an end encourages resilience and hope. While we may not understand every trial, we can hold onto the certainty that God is making all things new. This future vision fuels our endurance, reminding us that our present struggles are paving the way for an eternity with God free from pain and full of His presence. Let this truth inspire you to live with hope, even in the darkest times, as we await the fullness of God’s kingdom.

  • How does the promise of no more suffering impact your perspective on current trials?

  • What can you do to keep this future hope alive in your heart daily?

  • How might this vision of restoration influence your interactions with others who are suffering?

  • Thank God for the promise of a future without pain or suffering.

  • Pray for strength to endure with the hope of this promise in mind.
