Discussion Questions

  1. Read all of Matthew 6. What are you drawn to in this section of scripture? What questions pop in your mind. List them out. How do you see our text relating to this larger text?

  2. Consider Jesus’ teaching that that seeking the kingdom life involves seeking reward? Pastor Sam mentioned John Piper’s concept of Christian Hedonism and the idea seeking God’s glory is the most enjoyable and fulfilling thing a Christian can do. Interact with this idea. Do you agree? How does this interact with Jesus’ teaching about seeking rewards in our righteous acts?

  3. Consider your own giving and serving? Have you experienced the temptations Jesus warned of? Have you ever given money or time and reveled in the praise received? What might it look like for you to give your money and time to Jesus first and foremost? What might change in your heart around giving and serving if it were Jesus you were directly supporting?

  4. Consider your own prayer life. How do Jesus’ warnings sit with you? What might change in your prayer life if you believed that God simply delights to hear from you?

  5. Consider your practice of spiritual disciplines like fasting. How do Jesus’ warnings sit with you? Have you ever fallen into the trap of engaging in spiritual practices to be seen? What might it look like if you engaged in spiritual disciplines simply to delight God?

  6. What was God telling you this week? How about over this whole series? What have you done about it?
