Discussion Questions for 01/01/23

Read all of Ephesians 5. What Ideas stick out to you? What sorts of ideas have you historically associated with this text? What questions do you have? How does the opening genealogy speak into the birth narrative?

  1. Do you normally set yearly goals? How does this idea sit with you? Do you have a pattern or history of setting goals around your spiritual life?

  2. Paul says to avoid foolishness by knowing the will of God. Can you think of a time when your connection to God through his word helped you to avoid the foolishness of this world? What kinds of worldly foolishness are actually still attractive to you? Can you think of any specific passages of scripture that speak to your relationship with this specific foolishness?

  3. What do you intend to do to increase in intimacy with God through his word?

  4. Pastor Sam connected Paul’s warning about drunkenness to all kinds of escapism and numbing. What escapes and ways of numbing the heart are most tempting to you? Are there any areas you feel stuck in compulsive or addictive sinful behavior? How do these escapes numb you from experiencing life as God intends? How might the filling spirit move you toward freedom from this numbing?

  5. How does speaking and singing the gospel to one another practically look in your life? How can you intentionally incorporate this into your practice of faith?

  6. What was God telling you this week? What have you done about it?
