Discussion Questions

  1. Read all of 1 Peter 2. What Ideas stick out to you? What sorts of ideas have you historically associated with this text? What questions do you have? How does the opening genealogy speak into the birth narrative?

  2. Take a moment to consider your own history with the Church. What are some of the positive experiences? How about negative? Take some time to list both out. How has this effected your relationship to church right now?

  3. Pastor Sam zoned in on 1 Peter’s metaphors for the church, but the NT gives several. List out as many as you can (feel free to use google) Which ones do you most identify with? Why?

  4. Pastor Sam said that the Church is a called Jesus people, meaning that the church is a people, not a place, people who are actually saved, and people not person. How does this idea sit with you? Do you have any natural pushback? Why or why not?

  5. It was mentioned that Christians must gather with Jesus around his gospel for a gathering to be a church gathering. Can you think of some times when you’ve gathered with other christians, but your hearts or the discussion actually disinvited Jesus from the gathering? What might you need to change in your life to actively invite Jesus into your time with other believers?

  6. Pastor Sam said that because the church gathers around the gospel of Jesus, it necessitates that we gather with a local church and that this really requires commitment and consistency. Do you agree with this? Do you identify more with your membership in the universal church or a specific local church? How has local church ministry positively effected your faith journey?

  7. What was God telling you this week? What have you done about it?
