Read all of Matthew 16. What Ideas stick out to you? What sorts of ideas have you historically associated with this text? What questions do you have?
A week into our series, how does the working definition of the Church Pastor Sam gave sit with you? Jesus people, gathered with Jesus around the gospel of Jesus. What do you like about this definition? Is anything missing?
Peter knew Jesus as Messiah because God revealed this knowledge to him. How does this affect your understanding of your own trust in Jesus as Messiah?
Jesus has given his church on earth authority to do his work while we await him. How does this sit with you? Do you see authority in the church of Jesus? How about the local church? How does this work out practically?
Pastor Sam said that the keys to the kingdom are primarily for letting folk in. Remember back to your own salvation. What work did brothers or sisters do to open the door wide for you? What sorts of things might you need to practically engage to help hold the door wide for the lost in your own sphere of influence? How do you balance this with holding fast to the truth? Are these ideas in conflict?
How has the binding and loosing of other christians helped you grow in holiness over the course of our faith journey? Take a minute to list out some specific instances. How might you engage in this work of binding and loosing at Immanuel here and now?
