Read 1 Timothy 3:1-16. What ideas stick out to you as you read?
What are some ways that the offices of the church (pastors and deacons) have been a blessing to your faith journey?
Elders are supposed to be “able to teach” how do you understand this phrase in the life of a local church? Why do you suppose sound teaching is so important in the life of a church? How has sound teaching been a part of your faith journey?
Pastor Sam talked about how both pastors and deacons are to be exemplary in their faith. They need to be the sort of believers who can be looked to as examples of faith and maturity. How does this balance with the reality that all leaders in the local church are still sinful? What does this practically mean for both leaders and the church trying to follow them? What role does the Holy Spirit play in this?
The text says that Deacons who serve well gain a high standing in the church. Why do you suppose that is? How does this effect your understanding of the role and how it is to be filled by the church?
Do you suppose God might be calling you to a step of obedience in serving in an office of the church? If not, where do you serve your local church?
