Read all of Matthew 5:21-48. Consider all of Jesus’ “You have heard it said” teachings. What common threads do you see connecting these texts? How do you suppose they relate to the Sermon on the Mount as a whole?
Jesus’ teaching on divorce was shockingly strict for his day. It is just as stark today. Be honest, how does Jesus’ teaching here sit with you? In your gut reaction, what do you like or not like about it.
Pastor Sam said that biblically speaking marriage is not about the couple, but about proclaiming the love of God to the world. Do you agree with this? If this were true how might it effect your view of marriage? Whether your are currently married or not, take a minute and list out some implications of this idea.
Pastor Sam mentioned that biblically speaking, singleness is an equal life experience to marriage. What do you think about this? Consider what advantages might exist for Christian’s who are married in life? How about those who are single. Write these out.
Pastor Sam said we live in a culture that holds self-fulfillment as the highest aspiration. Do you agree with this? Why or why not? How might the Christian ethic of “all glory be to Christ” change your view of marriage? Singleness? Divorce? Keeping one’s word?
Do you consistently tell the truth? What relationships most tempt you to lie? What might change in your life if you were consistently honest with everyone?
What was God telling you this week? How about over this whole series? What have you done about it?
